Apec Essays - Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, APEC Peru

Apec The question is Can the Canadian government maintain its committment to globisation without comprimising its stand on human rights and why or why not? The answer is no. Canada's committment to globalization comprimises it's stands on human rights for different reasons. The main reason being APEC. The following paper will ague just that and how Apec is causing many problems in societies all over the world. APEC is a grouping of 18 economies which aims to impose a free trade zone in the Asia-Pacific region. Despite the rhetoric, there is nothing free about free trade. It is the forced changing of rules to benefit corporations at the expense of people, governments and the environment. As Joan Spero, the US Undersecretary of State for Economic Affairs said, APEC has a customer. APEC is not for governments, it is for business. Through APEC we aim to get government out of the way, opening the way for business to do business. The Termination of our Social Safety Net In theinternational market, there are cut backs made on employment insurance, welfare, education and health care are they are made under the excuse of luring investment. Any word of increasing taxes is extinguished by corporations forewarning to withdraw for a preferable business environment. Regardless of the skyrocketing profits, corporate contributions to tax revenues have plumetted from 50% in the 60's, to less than 8% today. It is suspected that it'll be sooner then later that Canada will adopt the impoverished American model - no safety net, just cold concrete. APEC has nagative effects on the Environment APEC and Free trade agreements like it, reduces international environmental standards by making the process of moving between states easier for businesses. In order for there to be compition, countries are obliged to slacken their environmental regulations to the lowest they can be by law. Canadian mining industries, which have been know as some of the bigest global polluterson the planet, have been abusing trade agreements like APEC by transfering to countries where they may operate without being disrupted by environmental protection. Free trade has already granted a ghastly amount of power to businesses, permitting them to effect government policy. The Corrotion of Human Rights Secretary of State (Asia Pacific), Raymond Chan, expresses our governments position, affirming that discussion of human rights and social development might impede progress on economic and trade issues. We give praise to and give special treatment to mass murderers such as Jiang Zemin of China andGeneral Suharto of Indonesia, when APEC pays a visit. Jiang Zemin was compliant in the Tiananmen square massacre, referring to it as much ado about nothing, and was liable for the heavy crackdown that ensued. Suharto is accountable (among other things) for the appeals from dissidents in both countries, Canada withholds their position on human rights and refuses to take a stand against it's abuses. (1) In order to save their reputation, Canadian government puts through constructive engagement. Constructive Engagement is a policy that allows the people of Canada to believe that the Canadian goverenmet is concerned with human rights, when in reality, it is business that they are really conscened with. Constructive engagement, for Canada, means voting againast or abstaining from every UN resolution condemning Indonesia's invasion of East Timor. However, we persist in the selling of weapon parts to the Indonesian military. Ultimately, Constructive engagement means we have a fatal fall back from life or death issues. (2) We should perhaps examine what's happening on our own territory, in addition to giving support to dissidents overseas. Canada and the US are recongized as profesionals in the area of maltreatment of native peoples. There's no democracy in APEC Although it's only been sice 1989 that APEC has been around, most people have probably only heard about it recently due to it's arrival in Vancouver. This is not surprising as APEC functions through closed door meetings of politicians, big business representatives, bureaucrats, and academics. The APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC), is the only institutional presence in APEC, that is not apart of the government. ABAC is made up of CEOs. Those who are affected most by APEC's policies have no say in APEC deliberations and policies. APEC does not function in isolation unlike some other organizations. Fundamental

And No Matter Where You Run Into It, Prejudice Obscures the Truth Essays

And No Matter Where You Run Into It, Prejudice Obscures the Truth Essays And No Matter Where You Run Into It, Prejudice Obscures the Truth Essay And No Matter Where You Run Into It, Prejudice Obscures the Truth Essay Twelve Angry Men Reginald Rose Pg 53 when juror 8 says â€Å"And no matter where you run into it, prejudice obscures the truth† he means when ever and where ever you are narrow-mindedness and racism can cloud your judgment towards people of all races and cultures, this can be proved by the stubbornness of juror 10 to change his mind about the boys case, and juror 3’s absolute unwillingness to change is mind even when all the other jurors starting with juror 8 note innocent. Juror 10 is one of the most racist and prejudice of the all the jurors a quote to show this is â€Å"Now you’re not going to tell us that we’re supposed to believe that kid, knowing what he is. Listen, I’ve lived among ‘em all my life. You can’t believe a word they say. I mean, they’re born liars. † When he says this he means/believes that people are born in slums are born to live lives of crime and disseat, even thou juror 5 was born and lived in a slum all his life he is a perfectly respectably man. This proves that juror 10 was wrong and people born in slums aren’t born to lie and commit crime. There for prejudice did obscure the truth for juror 10. Juror 3 is the last to change his note because of his grudge against kids this grudge started him and his son had a fight and his son left home ever since juror 3 has had prejudice against kids, when juror 3 says â€Å"That goddamn rotten kid. I know him. What they’re like. What they do to you. How they kill you everyday. My God, don’t you see? How come I’m the only one who sees? Jeez, I can feel that knife going in. this proves that juror 3 thinks he knows every kid in the whole world and knows that they are disrespectful and unthankful. In other words prejudice. When he says â€Å"Jeez, I can feel that knife going in† this shows that he is so shore of the boy committing the crime even thou the boy was found innocent in the end, showing that prejudice did lead juror 3 away from the truth there fo r proving the point that prejudice does obscure the truth. Despite all these facts juror 8 still saw the small chance that the boy could have been innocent a quote to show this is â€Å"But we have a reasonable oubt†¦. No jury can declare a man guilty unless it’s sure. † He’s telling us we have to be sure if we are going to blame someone for anything. This shows us that prejudice isn’t every where in the world and some people do look past race and cultural backgrounds. In conclusion we have to try to look past the color of someone’s skin where they come from are born or have grown up, and look at all the facts to get the absolute truth on the questions that are asked. Crazy Horse, A True American essays

Crazy Horse, A True American essays "A very great vision is needed and the man who has it must follow it as the eagle seeks the deepest blue of the sky. I was hostile to the white man...we preferred hunting to a life of idleness on our reservations. At times we did not get enough to eat and we were not allowed to hunt. All we wanted was peace and to be left alone. Soldiers came and destroyed our villages. Then Long Hair (Custer) came...They say we massacred him, but he would have done the same to us. Our first impulse was to escape but we were so hemmed in we Crazy Horse, as Remembered by Ohiyesa I chose to write about Crazy Horse because he is a man who suffered for the cause of freedom from genocide and oppression. He was a warrior for justice. Crazy Horse did not have an equal as a warrior or a chief. He gave submissive allegiance to no man, white or Indian, and claimed his inalienable rights, as an Indian, to wander at will over the hunting grounds of his people. He never registered at any agency; never touched a pen; never signed a treaty and refused to allow any photographs to be taken of him. He wanted only peace and a way of living for his people without having to live on the white man's reservations. Crazy Horse (Tashunkewitko) was born on the Republican River about 1845. He was killed at Fort Robinson, Nebraska, in 1877, so that he lived barely thirty-three years. He was an uncommonly handsome man. It is said that Crazy Horse was physically perfect, like an Apollo. He was modest and courteous, but was a born warrior. However, he was a gentle warrior, a true brave, who stood for the highest ideals of the Sioux. Biased historians have misconstrued facts surrounding Crazy Horse. It is only fair to judge a man by the estimate of his own people rather than that of his enemies. Crazy Horse earned his reputation among the Lakota not only by his skill and daring in battle but also by his fierce determination to preserv...

Free Essays on Turners Early And Late Works

â€Å"The work of Joseph Mallard William Turner represents a unique phenomenon in the history of painting: the successive achievement of two diametrically opposed styles of expression, implying a radical transformation of the sense of perception, the first style based on the continuation of an esthetic past, the second providing an example of a vision whose revolutionary power would be revealed in the time to come† (Selz 5). Looking at Turner’s early work and then looking at his later work is like looking at two very different artists. Turner was accepted as a â€Å"†¦technical revolutionary, as a prophetic visionary. Certainly he anticipated much in twentieth century painting, from impressionism to abstract color experimentation† (Lindsay front page). His work spans many years and changes from very classical landscapes to landscapes that make the eye travel through with the use of light and color to express emotion and feeling. Turner was born in London on April 23, 1775. He was the son of a barber and came from humble beginnings. His mother died when he was very young. He started drawing when he was very young; some of his drawings were done at twelve years old. He learned to draw by coping work others. By the time he was fourteen, he began the practise he continued all his life. He would travel during the summer months notes his way through the English countryside and through Europe. He would make notes from nature in pencil or watercolor, which he used afterward as material for his paintings. His main source of influence and encouragement, in his early years, came from Dr. Munro, who used to invite Turner, Girtin, and other young artists to his house and he would allow them to copy his collection of watercolors by J.R. Cozens (Chamot 5). Early on Turner revealed, through his works ‘Fisherman at Sea’ and ‘Moonlight: a Study of Millbank,’ that he had a sensitive eye for color, even in dark night scenes. H... Inflation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Inflation - Essay Example Inflation is defined as the rise of the level prices of goods and services in a given economy over a certain period of time. In the event of an inflation or the rise of prices of goods and services in a given economy, the purchasing power of a given currency is diminished to the effect that it will now require more units of money for the same goods and services purchased or the number of goods and services purchased with the same amount of money is reduced. In effect, inflation is the loss or the diminishing of value of money in a given economy (Blanchard 45). In plain language, inflation is the instance where goods and services get expensive or the phenomena where people complain that the price of commodities is rising. Concretely, if one unit of bread costs $1 before and it now costs $2 for the same unit of bread, the increase in price can be attributed to inflaction. Inflation is typically measured by comparing the annual change in Consumer Price Index (CPI) or the basket of goods that people normally buy over time. The effect of inflation can either be good or bad. Inflation has the effect of decreasing the net value of money because of the rise of the price of commodities. For example, the $1,000 savings this year may only have the purchasing power of $900 next year due to rising prices caused by inflation. This is not good for investors and consumers alike. For investors, this meant that the inputs for production will increase substantially over a short period of time and this could make the business uncompetitive because it has to pass the increase of the price of its inputs to its selling price making it more expensive than its competitors. For the consumers, it makes their lives difficult because their money cannot buy much goods and services and in extreme cases, excessive inflation, such as the case of hyperinflation can drive consumers to hoard goods to shielf themselves from excessive increase of prices causing shortage of goods. Inflation is gener ally caused by several factors. In the case of hyperinflation, it is typically caused by too much circulation of money or excessive money supply (Barro and Grilli 139). This meant that more money are printed and circulated for the same amount of goods and services that it now requires more money to buy the same goods and services. The classic example for this is the phenomena of the Mickey Mouse money in the Philippines during the Japanese occupation whereby the Japanese government issued Japanese peso in excess. The amount of money that was circulated was just too much that the currency was Mickey Mouse Money or play money because it became worthless that buying a mere loaf of bread requires a bag or case of money (Dijamco). Another common factor of inflation is the change either in demand or supply of goods and services. A sudden increase in demand of a certain goods or services can drive the price up given the same unit of supply (law of supply and demand, prices go up when deman d goes up). In the same vein, a contraction in supply can also result in inflation or the increase in price of commodities. The classic example for this is the decision of Organizationof Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to increase oil price in October of 1973 where the the increase of the world price of oil shot up as much as much as five times and backed by a selective embargo which was directed against the industrialized countries, Latin America and developing countries (Street, 1978). OPEC’s decision to increase the price of oil contributed to the recession of the US economy in 1974 to 1975. Another common cause of inflation is the excessive growth of money supply compared to rate of real economic growth (Mundell 280-283). For example, if an economy only produces an amount of goods services to $100 a year and yet it continues to print and circulate money to the amount of $150, it will naturally cause prices to go up because there are too much money circulating in the economy. Inflation however can also be good when its

Value Chain management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Value Chain management - Essay Example Another complementor, with respect to Relationship Management and Process Improvement, is the highly competitive automobile industry with cut throat competition between the company and General Motors, Honda and Toyota as is reflected by the competitive stock market of the respective companies (C.Heckscher & S.Adler, 2006)(Appendix 3). This provides an incentive for Nissan to come up with state of the art technology and new ways of serving customers better (process improvement). Furthermore, relationship management with customers is complemented by state of the art technology of the company, including the Nissan Fleet Communications (NFC) which provides customer support and maintains a customer database (Jha, 2008). Technology Management/ Relationship Management Perhaps, one of the most recent and core complementor is the Earthquake in Japan (and previously the Tsunami) which has virtually shaken the foundations of major Japanese manufacturers. The company is recently facing supply ch ain management crisis due to shortages of key parts. In some cases, the supplier was changed, in others; the plant was fixed by the supplier.
